Today we worked on adding "r" to our vowels to make the "er" sound. Your child brought home a blank word search with a list of "r" words. I encouraged the third graders to create the word search and give it to a family member to complete. Have fun!

The students are very proud of their realistic fiction pieces. They had the choice to type, record, or type and record their pieces. The whiteboard full of messages are the compliments they wrote to each other! Your child's PDF file is below. Unfortunately, if your child just recorded their story it can't be saved as a PDF, because it's all audio. They will be bringing their rough draft home soon. Please leave comments! They love to read them!
We started our forces and motion unit today. We learned that motion is a change in position. Position is a way to describe an object by comparing it to another object. For example, I am in front of the chair. I am behind the bookcase. To practice using these position words, we got together with a partner and a pile of objects. While sitting back to back, we told our partner what to do with the objects. The goal was for both creations to look the same at the end. They were pretty creative with their creations....and pretty good listeners of these directions as well. This week we will learn about the many ways the long “o” sound can be made:
1. o_e as in cone 2. oa as in boat 3. ow as in snow 4. old as in cold Practice at home: Fill the sink with a little bit of water. Using your finger practice writing your words into the water! The long “i” sound can be made following many different patterns. This week we will learn about the following patterns:
1. i_e as in kite 2. igh as in light 3. y as in fly Practice at home: Try practicing your words at home this week by writing each word in a sentence. This week we are focusing on the different spelling patterns for the long /e/ sound.
1. ey as in hey 2. ee as in seed 3. ea as in bead 4. y as in early Practice at home: Try practicing your words at home this week by taking a practice test. Have mom or dad give you a spelling test. Any word that you got wrong write 3 times. We had fun this week as we started to learn about measurement. After realizing how many different things that we measure, we noticed how important this skill really is. Many of the students related measurement to their future career dreams. During our workshop time students had the opportunity to play a matching game, read a measurement book, and experiment with measurement tools. |
