Your child is also bringing home a project today called, “I’m a Michigan Kid.” This project will help wrap up our study of Michigan geography. Attached is a copy of the note coming home, as well as, some examples. I hope you enjoy creating this project with your child. It is due on Friday, November 13. Attached are the directions and examples. Just to make things tricky, last week we discovered that sometimes our long e spelling patterns make the short e sound! For example, the word bread has the long e pattern of ea. However, we pronounce it with the short e sound. We will be looking at words with this very tricky pattern this week!
Practice at home: Try practicing your words at home this week by writing all of your spelling words in crayon or pen. Write all the consonants in blue and all the vowels in red. We all worked together today to generate ideas for our opinion essays. There were posters with topics all around the room. The students got to rotate to different posters and write their opinion of that topic on it. Who wouldn't like to write down their opinion? We used these to start to write our pieces today! The students had fun on Monday playing a Long E spelling game. We will continue to identify the vivid verbs authors use by reading the book Come on Rain! This book is filled with beautiful verbs that we will be excited to incorporate into our own writing. This week we started writing a new genre: Opinion Essays! Third graders are full of opinions, so this is a perfect genre for them! They will be learning how to pick an opinion that is important to them, support it with reasons and evidence, and how to start and conclude these pieces.
Today we started to learn about Michigan’s geography. We learned that geography is the study of places and geographers are people who study places. During this unit, 3rd graders will be geographers! They will be learning about where Michigan is, about natural and human characteristics, the natural resources found in Michigan, and the regions to which Michigan belongs.
Each year our Parents Club offers Santa’s Secret Shop: an opportunity for our students to shop for immediate family members at fairly reasonable prices. Parents Club recognizes that although prices may be reasonable, some families just can’t afford this event. To support those families, Parents Club offers free shopping for a number of students.
Also recognizing that some families choose not to participate for other reasons, it can be difficult to determine who is truly in need versus those who wish not to participate. This year Parents Club would like to try a different process in identifying families in need. If your family is experiencing difficult financial times to the point where shopping at Santa’s Secret Shop is not possible, please respond by emailing or call Mark Heagle ([email protected] or 669-9362) with a short explanation of your situation. Details will not be shared with Parents Club, but will help Mark determine need in comparison to the available money for free shoppers. It may not be possible to honor all requests depending on situation specifics and available money. The deadline for responding has been extended to November 13, 2015. Special thanks to our Parents Club for continuing to offer events that are reasonably priced and their concern for families in need. |
