As we have been studying the natural characteristics of Michigan, we have taken the time to learn all about Michigan's 5 Great Lakes. We learned that we can use the acronym HOMES to help us remember the names: Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior. We also had fun using our iPads to research each lake and record facts that we learned about them!

We are ready to start our third writing unit this week! Our first two units focused on personal narratives. This unit will focus on personal essays. Personal essays include an introduction (bold beginning) that states an opinion, a middle that includes support for the author's opinion, and a conclusion (excellent ending) that restates the opinion. We will spend a lot of time this week diving into lots of personal essays written by published authors and past third graders. This will help us have a good understanding before we write our very own! I have attached two examples of final pieces that we are expecting students to publish by the end of the unit.
Your child has now learned all of their facts 0-10! Practicing and learning these facts is crucial not only for this unit, but many upcoming units as well. The remainder of our 2nd unit focuses primarily on word problems. Although these are normally hard for the students, it does show math in real life. While solving these problems students are encouraged to use a strategy that matches the problem. These strategies include: repeated addition, skip counting, equal groups pictures, arrays, and area drawings. When helping your child at home with homework word problems, encourage your child to picture what is happening and to use a strategy that matches.
Spelling Practice Fun Tip, Week 5: Rainbow Write! Have your child write their word time with one color. Then trace over it again with another color. Repeat for a third time. Each time your child is tracing the letter, make sure that they say the letter as well.
This week we have been focusing on the short and long u sound. The short sound says "uh" like in hug. The long sound says its name, like in huge. For one activity this week, we went around the room and looked at the words that were hanging all around. We had to read the word and sort it in the correct category. The 7th Annual PE CARES food drive began November 8. The competition will run from now until November 21. In an attempt to bring in a better variety of foods, we are asking each grade level to bring in different food groups.
PreK, K, and 1st grade: Carbohydrates (pasta, rice, crackers, cereal, etc) 2nd-3rd grades: Fruits and Vegetables (non-perishable) 4th-5th grades: Protein and Other (tuna fish, peanut butter, baked beans, etc) All grades: Toiletries (deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, etc) All food donations will be accepted, even if they do not fit into your category. The class that brings in the highest number of items will win a PE CARES t-shirt and a bowling field trip to Hudsonville Lanes! Thank you for your help and support in this opportunity to teach our kids compassion and love for others! We just wrapped up our 2nd unit on personal narratives (true stories about us). We recorded our students using photobooth and are excited to share them with you. You may need to turn up the volume as some of us used quiet voices. Please be sure to leave us a comment below!
