The students are very proud of their realistic fiction pieces. They had the choice to type, record, or type and record their pieces. The whiteboard full of messages are the compliments they wrote to each other! Your child's PDF file is below. Unfortunately, if your child just recorded their story it can't be saved as a PDF, because it's all audio. They will be bringing their rough draft home soon. Please leave comments! They love to read them!

We had so much sharing our non-fiction pieces together! We all worked together today to generate ideas for our opinion essays. There were posters with topics all around the room. The students got to rotate to different posters and write their opinion of that topic on it. Who wouldn't like to write down their opinion? We used these to start to write our pieces today! This week we started writing a new genre: Opinion Essays! Third graders are full of opinions, so this is a perfect genre for them! They will be learning how to pick an opinion that is important to them, support it with reasons and evidence, and how to start and conclude these pieces.
After reading "The Library Mouse" we all looked into the "Meet the Author" box and discovered that we are writers! Because what we write...might just change the world!
This week the students have been learning about public issues. We have examined some possible public issues at South including: -Should we be allowed to chew gum? -Should we be allowed to wear hats? -Should we all wear uniforms? -Should everyone be required to play an instrument? We learned that before we can give our opinion about something, we need to do some research. The students used videos and articles to learn about the different viewpoints people had about their public issue. To practice for the M-Step today we completed a shared writing. We all worked together on different paragraphs to put together one complete piece of writing. Because the students used their best writing skills (topic sentences, transition words, conclusion sentences) their writing flowed perfectly! Way to go! After weeks of really hard work, the students finished their animal research papers! They turned out so well, your child will bring them soon! Here we are reading and celebrating each other's work! We will take some time this week to practice for the upcoming M-Step (formally called MEAP). To do this we will be listening and reading stories and answering questions about each. We will also read articles and respond to them in writing. We are doing these steps altogether in small chunks so that students feel successful when their testing window arrives in late May.
