Each week we look at a sentence from a great picture book. We take time to investigate the sentence by writing down what we notice about the sentence and then we label the sentence. After we have a good idea of what the sentence was like, we get to copy the author's pattern and try to write a similar sentence. Here is the sentence we worked on this week.
I'm the speediest snake in the jungle and I'm still turning green. Below (in the comments) are our versions of a similar sentence. This week we will focus on the different spelling patterns for long /o/ (o_e, oa, ow, old). We know that long /o/ can be spelled with a bossy /e/ at the end as in mole, it can also be spelled with a /oa/ spelling pattern as in boat. /Ow/ and /old/ are new patterns for us this week. Snow has the /ow/ pattern and cold has the /old/ pattern.
Practice at home: Try practicing your words at home this week by using scrabble or banana gram tiles. Parents, I found this great article that describes the different multiplication strategies we learn in third grade. You may find it helpful!
http://nrich.maths.org/2469 The students have now officially learned all their multiplication facts. Here are some videos to help them review their 6s, 7s, and 8s. We are starting a brand new unit today- reading books in a series! This is always an important milestone for the students. They grow greatly (as readers and as students) during this unit. They will...
-Work with a partner to complete 3+ chapter books in a just right series -Push themselves to use their reading time wisely by reading at least 30 pages a day! -Think deeply about their characters and how they grow and change over a series. -Make predictions based on what they know to be true about a series. Some students might need to bring home their reading, so that they can accomplish this goal. If so, you will find a sticker in their agenda with the page numbers they need to read. What's better than reading several books from a series? Listening to a series! During our read aloud, we will also be reading through a great series- Jake Drake by Andrew Clements. Your child will be bringing home their conference times paper and pre-conference questions page. In order for me to prepare best for your top concerns, please both papers out and return at your nearest convenience.
Your child will be bringing home a paper today on xtra math. This is a great way for your child to work on their facts. It will first take the students through addition, then subtraction, and finally multiplication and division. We are using this website in class as well!
I have finished testing every student's reading level! You should have received some form of communication from me regarding your child's current level. Currently, third graders are expected to be at level N. If you are looking for books at your child's new reading level please check out this website:
http://www.scholastic.com/bookwizard/ Here you can look up the levels of books you may have, search for books at a level, and search for similar books that your child already likes. When you are looking at the levels you want to be using the GUIDED READING levels. Happy Reading! The students had a great time today celebrating the end of our reading unit. Thanks to everyone who donated the special treats so that we could have a mini party, just like our book! We also took the time to look through all the book logs we filled out this month and reflected on our reading. Finally, in the book, Because of Winn Dixie, Opal (the main character) creates top 10 lists about people she loves. So we did something similar by creating the top 10 things about our reading partner. It was a great way to end the unit! |
