Today the Jamestown Fire Department stopped by to teach our 3rd graders about fire safety. They reminded students not to touch matches, to locate the 2 ways they could get out of their room, to plan a family emergency plan in case of a fire, and to locate the smoke detectors in their home. It was a fun opportunity and we appreciate the time they spent with our class! Spelling Practice Fun Tip, Week 4: Type it! We need to work on our typing skills, why not put it together with spelling! Have your child practice their spelling words by typing them out on a computer, tablet, or phone.
We are still working on short and long vowel sounds this week. This week we are focusing on the vowel "o." Sometimes "o" makes its short sound, like in words cot, sod, and mop. Other times it makes its long sound, like in words those, rode, and wrote. On Friday afternoon we took a little time to celebrate all of our hard work on the MEAP tests. We played games with all of the para-pros that help out in our classroom. It was a fun way to get to know each other and spend time together in a different way! We have begun our second math unit. This unit builds off unit one (multiplication and division) but focuses on 6, 7, and 8 facts. Students are encouraged to use all the strategies they've learned in unit 1 to solve these tricky facts. Attached are parent pages from our math curriculum.
The November lunch menu is attached.
Spelling Practice Fun Tip, Week 3: Use finger paints or letter stamps to paint/stamp your spelling words.
This week we are working on short and long "i" words. We learned that the "i" says its name when there is a bossy "e"at the end of the word. We had our first typing test today. 3rd-5th graders take monthly typing tests using the website: freetypinggame.net. By the end of third grade students are expected to type 10 words per minute. Your child can practice this skill at home by going to the Hudsonville Public School Website homepage. Look for the link that reads Elementary Web Links
After learning all about our Core Democratic Values, we created these projects using an app called StoryKit.

Do you have extra pipe cleaners at home? Have students use these craft tools to shape the letters of their spelling words. This week our words will focus on the short a and long a sounds. The long a pattern we are working on is a...with a bossy "e" on the end. For example: game, gate, bake, date, etc. Help your child identify which words on their list have the long and short a sound this week as they practice their words. |
