PE Cares is collecting canned food for their annual food drive. Third graders are asked to bring in fruits and veggies. Our class had the goal to bring 5 items per student! Currently we only have 11 canned goods, but we have until Friday to continue to collect!!!

This week the student's have been working hard to begin their own personal essays. They have picked their topic and have developed their introductions. Next we will be backing our opinions with reasons and evidence. For third graders the evidence will be small personal narratives that prove their reasons.
Throughout the year the students will have a chance to be our (Mrs. Hultink, Mrs, DeRoos, or Ms. O) recess buddy. They will get to choose what we do and who we do it with. Today, Megan was Mrs. Hultink's buddy! She made the decision to play out in the snow with Zina and Clara. Together we tried to make snowmen. After a few failed attempts, we made a snow lady bug.
Snow much fun! This week we will be learning about more spelling patterns for the long /i/. Long /i/ can be spelled i_e as in the word "bike." It can be spelled -igh as in the word "high." It can also be spelled with -y as in the word "sky." As your child practices their spelling words this week help them recognize the spelling pattern.
Practice at home: Try practicing your words at home this week by writing each word in a sentence. Spelling and grammar count! Thank you so much for attending your child's parent teacher conference! It was so nice to talk to all of you and give you an update on your child's progress so far in 3rd grade. We have a long time until we meet again (March). Please remember that you can contact me at any times with questions or concerns. Email, phone calls, notes in your child's agenda are all great ways to stay connected.
We have been working really hard the last few days to solve 2 step word problems. These problems are tricky because we not only have to determine the first step and the second step, we also need to know how to write an equation that matches our thinking.
To do this we have relied on our reading skills. We need to actually picture the story problem in our head so that we can solve it in a way that makes sense. Below is a link of some helpful videos and online practice questions for your child to complete as extra practice: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-third-grade-math/cc-3rd-mult-div-topic/cc-3rd-two-step-word-problems/v/how-many-truffle-eating-guests-attended-a-party If you came into our classroom right now during reading, you would notice students sitting near their reading partners, reading the same book, trying to stick to their reading plan, and taking notes along the way. We spend 5-10 minutes towards the end of the lesson having meaningful conversations about our books and what we've noticed.
As we have finished our first (or more) book in the series we are now ready to make some interesting comparisons. We will ask ourselves.... -Is our main character acting in a similar or different way than book 1? -Is our character facing a similar or new problem? How are the solving the problem? -Who are the secondary characters? Are the different or similar from book 1? Mrs. Keskitalo came to our classroom today to teach the student's about their internal "engines." We started off thinking about a car racing down 32nd. We talked about how that car might get into an accident, might run into something, might get a ticket, etc. Sometimes our bodies are all revved up....like a car speeding down the road. This causes us to get in trouble, make careless errors, not able follow directions, complete tasks, and/or hurt others. To slow our bodies/brains down we can: get drink of water, take deep breaths, do chair push ups, rock, doodle, listen to quiet music, hold a lap weight, and/or rub lotion on. Other times our bodies/brains are running very slow. We pictured a car going extremely slow down 32nd. This car might get honked at, it could get bumped, it might not get to where they were going on time, etc. We related this to ourselves, when we are moving slowly which can cause us to feel like we are not able to catch up, it can make tasks seem overwhelming, or causes others to be frustrated with us because they need to wait for us. To speed up our bodies we can: crew gum, eat pretzels, walk to the office and come back, eat granola, suck on a sour candy, blow bubbles, use a fidget toy, spin in place, and/or carry a stack of books. When our engine is running at the right speed we are able to listen, pay attention, follow directions, and feel successful. To stay just right we can relax, do our best work, and feel proud. We will have 2 boxes in our room full of tools the students can use to help rev up their engines or slow down their engines. These will be tools the students can use when they feel they need a break or when an adult in our room feels they need a break. Our goal is to be at the right speed so we can all do our best work! |
