We started our forces and motion unit today. We learned that motion is a change in position. Position is a way to describe an object by comparing it to another object. For example, I am in front of the chair. I am behind the bookcase. To practice using these position words, we got together with a partner and a pile of objects. While sitting back to back, we told our partner what to do with the objects. The goal was for both creations to look the same at the end. They were pretty creative with their creations....and pretty good listeners of these directions as well.

If you could have walked by our room the last few days during science, you would have heard a lot of different SOUNDS. We learned how to use different vibrations while blowing on our straw horns and striking our drums!
Then we learned about loud and soft sounds. We practiced using energy to make loud and soft claps. This week we have been learning a lot about sound! We've learned that sound is a type of energy that is created by vibrations. It travels through matter and can be created by blowing, plucking, strumming, or striking. This week we will learn about volume and pitch!
Your child should have brought home their plant study guide home on Friday. Below you can find a copy if it was misplaced. Also, I attached two videos that we watched in class on plant parts and photosynthesis. Having your child re-watch these could be a great way to review. To learn about plant parts today, we participated in 4 centers:
1. Read a book about plants 2. Eat plant parts (their favorite) 3. Watch a movie on plant parts 4. Read an article on plant parts A BIG THANK YOU to the parents who donated items to make our "plant eating" center a success. We had so much fun in science learning about seed parts yesterday. The kids thought it was so neat to find all the seed parts in a lima bean. We then planted them and hope to watch them grow!
We are looking forward to our upcoming plant unit! We have some wonderful things planned, but we need your help. By clicking on the link below you can find the items we are in need of and sign up to bring it in!
Thanks in advance for signing up! http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0f4eabac22a1f94-plant We had a lot of fun visiting the 5th grade science fair! This week we will be learning all about Forces and Motion. Students will be exploring the force of friction which can either speed up or slow down the motion of the object and gravity which is the force that brings us to the center of the Earth. Next students students will explore simple machines (wheel and axle, pulley, wedge, lever, pulley, and inclined plane) which are devices that change the direction or magnitude of a force.
This week we will be wrapping up our Earth's surface unit. We will be learning how volcanoes rapidly change the surface of the earth. In our next mini unit, we will focus on reducing, reusing, and recycling. Your child will be making a plan of how he/she can help protect our natural resources with the 3 Rs. I hope your family will get to try and implement one or more of your child's ideas within your home.
