The students planned and drafted their comparative chapters this week. We used Venn-diagrams to plan our pieces and talked about how to make them balanced. Then we learned how to use parallel structure to write our drafts. This meant that if we are comparing a cat and a dog and talking about what they eat we need to give information about both- the cat and the dog. This takes both writing and organizational skills to be successful.
We have spent our time in reading this week learning new strategies to figure out the meaning of tricky words. We have learned that authors are normally really helpful and give us an example, definition, synonym, or antonym to give us clues to what these words mean.
Below are some examples: Example: The river was full of noxious materials like pesticides. Definition: The joey, a baby kangaroo, peeked out from his mother. Synonym: There are many theories, or ideas, about school. Antonym: Although some men are loquacious, others hardly ever talk. We started a new unit this week in math. This unit will cover place value, rounding, addition, and subtraction. The students have learned about a new value- the thousands place! 10 hundreds make up 1 thousand. We have also learned that there are 2 ways to read these numbers. For example if the number is 2,356 we can say two thousand, three hundred fifty-six OR we can say 23 hundred fifty-six.
This knowledge of place value has also helped us solve place value word problems. For example, the school had 325 hot dog buns delivered. They were put in bags of 10 each. How many bags were full? How many hot dog buns were left over? We can solve this by drawing pictures (but that could take a loooonng time). So, to speed things along we can think of our place value knowledge. We know that in the number 325 there are 32 tens. So 32 bags would be full and there are 5 left over. We have completed all of our social studies units! The students are now ready to learn all about science. Mrs. Schut leads our science units. Please see the note from her below:
Hello 3rd grade families! My name is Mrs. Schut and I teach the other 3rd grade class at South Elementary. I am so excited to begin teaching your child all about science! This week will be an exciting week for your third grader as they will begin switching classes. I will be seeing your child everyday M-TH to learn all about science topics which include: plants, animals, light, sound, Earth materials, changes in the Earth, reduce, reuse, recycle, and forces of motion. Our first unit will be all about plants. We will be creating a social contract with promises that we plan to follow when in science, why plants are important, the parts of a seed, and what seeds need to grow. If you ever have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me at [email protected]. Today our 3rd Grade Expert Club taught us about responsibility. They wrote their own script, practiced during their recess time, and performed it for us on Friday. It was a great reminder for us to be responsible.
One new standard for the M-Step (formally the MEAP) is something called "Performance Tasks." This is when students take a skill they know how to do (graphing) and apply it to real life situations. There is a lot involved in this task besides just math skills. Students need to know how to read and follow directions independently. Students need to take their time and persevere through tasks that take longer than 5 minutes to complete. They need to check their work, because just one mistake could throw off all their work. After we completed one part together as a class, the students worked in small groups to complete a task on their own. Below are the positive things we noticed while the students were working.
Our third graders are looking forward to the 2nd annual Super Bowl Learning Party! Dads, Grandpas, Uncles, Family Friends are invited to join their beloved third grader to complete some fun Superbowl activities! The party will be on January 29 from 2:30-3:30.
If you are able to attend or donate items for our party, please sign up using the link below. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0f4eabac22a1f94-super Writing has been so much fun this week, primarily because of the student's excitement for the topic. I've been trying to take it slow and give them some background knowledge before we get started, but they can't wait any longer! This week we worked on writing our descriptive chapter for our topic. We planned for this chapter using a web and then made sure to include lots of details about these topics as we wrote! Next week we are on to our sequential chapter.
