Simple sentences and adjectives are two grammar terms we will be reviewing this week as we enjoy the book If You Find a Rock. We will remind ourselves that simple sentences have one subject and one predicate, they express one idea. Adjectives can be used in simple sentences to describe the nouns.

When we take two words and smash them together into one word with an apostrophe in between we create contractions! This week we will be working on learning the spelling of commonly used contractions.
Practice at home: Try practicing your words at home this week by asking mom or dad for some shaving cream. Squirt some shaving cream onto a cookie sheet and write your words into the shaving cream. We are starting a new unit this week that will cover place value (0-9,999), 3 digit addition, and 3 digit subtraction. This first week we will be spending a lot of time reviewing place value, understanding how to compare problems, and rounding numbers. When we talk about place value, we think about the four different ways we can show a number (standard form, picture form, expanded form, and written form). Expanded form seems to be a tricky one for many third graders, this website does a great job at reinforcing what we are teaching at school: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AF7xj7pmWc
Then we will talk about how to notice which numbers are greater and less than other numbers. To do this we will use the greater than >, less than <, and = equal to symbols. Finally, we will learn how to round numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. We will do this by looking at number lines and noticing how close our number is to the nearest 10 count by or 100 count by. These videos do a great job at reinforcing the learning how to round numbers: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-third-grade-math/cc-3rd-place-value-rounding/cc-3rd-grade-rounding/v/rounding-to-the-nearest-10 (rounding to the nearest 10) https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-third-grade-math/cc-3rd-place-value-rounding/cc-3rd-grade-rounding/v/rounding-to-the-nearest-100 (rounding to the nearest 100) https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-third-grade-math/cc-3rd-place-value-rounding/cc-3rd-grade-rounding/v/examples-rounding-to-the-nearest-10-and-100 (round to the nearest 10 or 100) We are still working on really learning our long vowel spelling patterns. This week we will learn that the long u sound can be made with u-consonant-e, as in flute. It can also be made with “oo” as in tooth.
Practice at home: Try practicing your words at home this week by writing them in alphabetical order. Thank you for helping your child complete their I’m a MI Kid project! They were so excited and proud to share them today! Together we took the time to walk around and view each one! As Michigan Geographers, we have continued to learn about how to describe Michigan and discover our great state! We have learned that Michigan is full of natural resources (natural characteristics that can be used to make a product) including: water, oil, gas, and fertile soil. We also learned that Michigan can be divided into many different regions, but the most popular regions are the Upper and Lower Peninsula. The Lower Peninsula is full of people, cities, and businesses. The Upper Peninsula is includes more wildlife, waterfalls, and mountains. Our test for this unit is on Wednesday, November 18, please have your child take a moment to review. Below are pictures of the students learning about each other's MI Kid Projects. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Look at all these new books we were able to add to our classroom library! These are a result of your personal donations and a gift from the PTC! All the money raised during the Fall Book Fair is used to purchase books for the classrooms at South! This is a wonderful blessing and treat!
Did your child come home rapping the PEMDAS song? I still haven't gotten it out of my head yet. Here is the video we used to learn about orders of operations. If your child hasn't shown you the motions yet, please ask them to do so soon! Thanks to some very special readers, the students were able to hear some great books about Michigan today including: Lighthouses, The Mackinaw Bridge, Legend of the Sleeping Bear Dunes, and Michigan Lighthouses.
Thanks Bridget, Zach, Addi, and Reid! In honor of Veterans Day, the students took some time to read articles about Veterans day and complete an activity. They enjoyed discovering the meaning of Veterans day and why it was celebrated. They were then able to get together with students from other groups and share what they learned. |
