We had fun this week as we started to learn about measurement. After realizing how many different things that we measure, we noticed how important this skill really is. Many of the students related measurement to their future career dreams. During our workshop time students had the opportunity to play a matching game, read a measurement book, and experiment with measurement tools.

We will now be shifting gears to subtraction. Just like with addition, we will be learning different strategies we can use to solve 3 digit subtraction problems. Just like with addition, we will be learning many different strategies (ways) to subtract. Students will find one that works best for them and that is one that they should stick with.
We are starting a new unit this week that will cover place value (0-9,999), 3 digit addition, and 3 digit subtraction. This first week we will be spending a lot of time reviewing place value, understanding how to compare problems, and rounding numbers. When we talk about place value, we think about the four different ways we can show a number (standard form, picture form, expanded form, and written form). Expanded form seems to be a tricky one for many third graders, this website does a great job at reinforcing what we are teaching at school: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AF7xj7pmWc
Then we will talk about how to notice which numbers are greater and less than other numbers. To do this we will use the greater than >, less than <, and = equal to symbols. Finally, we will learn how to round numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. We will do this by looking at number lines and noticing how close our number is to the nearest 10 count by or 100 count by. These videos do a great job at reinforcing the learning how to round numbers: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-third-grade-math/cc-3rd-place-value-rounding/cc-3rd-grade-rounding/v/rounding-to-the-nearest-10 (rounding to the nearest 10) https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-third-grade-math/cc-3rd-place-value-rounding/cc-3rd-grade-rounding/v/rounding-to-the-nearest-100 (rounding to the nearest 100) https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-third-grade-math/cc-3rd-place-value-rounding/cc-3rd-grade-rounding/v/examples-rounding-to-the-nearest-10-and-100 (round to the nearest 10 or 100) Did your child come home rapping the PEMDAS song? I still haven't gotten it out of my head yet. Here is the video we used to learn about orders of operations. If your child hasn't shown you the motions yet, please ask them to do so soon! The students learned a new game during math on Friday. They had a lot of fun playing it, while practicing their facts at the same time! I attached the game below.
Today we learned about area. Area is the measurement of square units that cover a surface. We learned that to find the area of a rectangle all we need to do is multiply the length by the width.
To practice this skill we mad some area robots and then added the area of each part. We used our desks as dry erase boards today as we multiplied and divided by 2! The kids thought it was very cool and had no idea how much they were learning in the process! On Tuesday we learned about division by reading the book "The Doorbell Rang." We had fun trying to figure out how many cookies each child would get. Of course we finished by enjoying cookie snack! We spent some time in math this week learning how we can put shapes together to make new shapes! For example, two triangles can make a square. After we worked on some very challenging problems we relaxed by creating pictures with our shapes! A special thank you for all the donations of cheese-its. We used them to find the area and perimeter of shapes (and enjoyed them for snack too)! Below are a few pictures of us in action. Also, there are 2 movies below that serve as a great review for area and perimeter. Please note: the students do NOT need to know how to find the area of a triangle (however it is included on the area video). |
